Module Two: Classical Islamic Sciences Email

Mode of Attendance: Part time
Part of the Foundation Year

The Classical Islamic Sciences module of the Foundation Level at ASI is designed to provide students with a comprehensive grounding in various Islamic sciences, such as the law of personal worship, tafsir and hadith. The course will comprise of core texts in all the major Islamic disciplines, and will allow the student to progress to the level of ‘alimiyyah under the supervision of Shaykh Akram Nadwi.

Students who successfully complete all of the modules of the programme will be awarded a Certificate in Classical Islamic sciences. Successful completion means that the student has followed and completed all of the assignments satisfactorily and passed the end-of-year written exams.

By the end of the course, students will have achieved:

  • A good understanding of the core Islamic sciences.
  • Studied the law of personal worship based on Mukhtasar al-Quduri (Hanafi fiqh)
  • Studied tafsir of Surah al-Fatihah and Juzz one
  • Studied hadith from the Mukhtasar of Bukhari by Ibn Abi Jamrah.

In addition, students will study important introductory texts on the principles of the Islamic sciences:

  • ‘Ulum al-Quran: al-Tashil li ‘ulum al-Tanzil of Ibn Juzayy
  • Usul al-fiqh: Mabadi fi usul al-fiqh  by Dr Akram Nadwi
  • Mustalah al-hadith: Bayquniyyah

Furthermore, students will have a great opportunity to study further texts related to the core subjects with international scholars through our flagship Sacred Sciences Journey during umrah. This is designed to give students the opportunity to study and receive connecting licences (ijazat) from various world-renowned international scholars. Students who enrol on to the auxiliary Sacred Science Journey (Saudi Arabia, April 2015) and complete the Islamic sciences module will be awarded a Certificate in Introductory Islamic Sciences.

The students will also have the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge by attending our one week ‘Islamic Law and Spirituality’ residential programme during the summer (August 2015).

All lectures will be delivered in English by qualified scholars and will be uploaded on our ‘Virtual Madrasah’, an online student portal. Students will get further study resources and an opportunity to ask questions out of class time via the virtual madrasah.

All term-time classes will run on Sundays and will consist of three terms of 10 weeks. Students will be expected to produce a number of essays during term time and to sit an end of year written exam.

Although it is recommended that students complete all units and modules of Foundation Level in one year, it will still be possible for students to study modules and units independently without committing to the full programme.

Students who complete the studying of any text will, whenever possible, be given an ijazah in that text by the teacher with a full chain of transmission (isnad) to the author.

Online and Distant Learning

This course is also available online through our Virtual Madrasah with full study materials and audio and video recordings of all lectures. Students will have the flexibility to study at their own pace and convenience, whereby their study can fit around work and lifestyle commitments. The live online classes can be accessed from anywhere in the world and they are fully interactive, with students able to fully participate in the class discussion.
