Foundation Applied Arabic and Grammar 1

Overview

This module introduces Arabic grammar while building on the basic knowledge of Arabic reading and Quran recitation. Rules of grammar, including sarf (morphology) and forms, are introduced briefly. Writing, reading, speaking and comprehension practice are included in order to build further proficiency in the Arabic language. This level provides foundations for further study in classical and Modern Standard Arabic.

About the primary texts

Arabic Through the Qur'an: Written by Prof Alan Jones, professor of Arabic at Oxford University. This work aims at teaching Arabic using only the vocabulary in the Quran. In forty lessons, and starting with the alphabet, the text gives the student a thorough understanding of Arabic grammar and a substantial vocabulary from the Quran, including many of the oft-repeated verses. Each lesson is followed by exercises and a key to the exercises is available at the end of the book. This text will be an aid to both those wanting to learn Arabic in order to be able to read the Quran and those who want to learn Arabic at an advanced level.

 

 

Durus al-lughah al-'Arabiyyah: This text is taught in The Islamic University, Madinah. The books teach essential language skills through applied grammar. Lessons are based on conversations which illustrate distinctive language patterns. A variety of exercises help the student to understand and master each of the patterns occurring in the lesson. The vocabulary ranges from classical Arabic to words and expressions current in modern Arabic.

Al-‘Arabiyyah bayna yadayk: The series has a modern approach using the latest methods from the science of linguistics as the foundation of the curriculum. This series is designed for the non-Arabic-speaking adult students. It helps the student learn Arabic through listening and conversation, along with reading and writing. The series stresses communication and also offers glimpses into Arabic culture, both Islamic and national.

 

Teaching Method

Teaching Method

The module will comprise three lessons per week; each lesson will be 55 minutes long. The lecturer will be teaching from a practical Arabic textbook or extracts from the list of primary texts of the module.  A unique feature of this course is that all teaching will be in Arabic; no English will be spoken except when absolutely necessary. There will be an encouragement for the teaching to be interactive, with questions both posed to the students and welcomed from them. Lessons will also have practical sessions of speaking, listening and an exercise. The teacher may also use PowerPoint presentations and post-supplementary notes and recorded webinars as study aids.

Learning Outcomes

 

Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

 

  • Identify the components of sentences.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the varying grammatical morphology.
  • Demonstrate basic understanding of the different scales of Arabic verbs.
  • Differentiate and apply gender, number and form structures to verbs.
  • Demonstrate measurable improvement in reading, writing and comprehension skills.

  • The composition and parts of a complete sentence
  • Classifications of verbs with regard to time periods
  • Comparisons and examples of active and passive participants
  • Subject and predicate of sentences
  • Subjunctive, jussive and nominative cases of the imperfect verb tense
  • Kana and inna and their related sisters
  • Genitive case of the noun
  • Adjectives and their classifications
  • Introduction to the forms of trilateral verbs
  • Strong and weak verbs

Assessment

This course will involve a number of class exercises, homework, and an end-of-course written examination.

Teacher Profile

Ustadh Ayman Abdel-Haleem has completed his BA in Arabic at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London with a first class honours. Following his graduation he travelled to Egypt, where he spent a number of years completing his Arabic and Islamic Studies. After returning from Egypt, he continued his studies at the University of Cambridge, where he completed an MPhil in Theology from the faculty of Divinity.

He has worked at The Golden Web in Cambridge for three years as chief translators and researchers in the Arabic department. Shaykh Ayman has translated and edited a number of modern and classical Arabic works including a three volume history and topography of Cairo by Dr Farouq al-Asker. His other works includes translation of the Arabic Grammar book Al-Ajrumiyyah and Imam Jalal-Al-Din Al-Suyuti’s, The Perfect Guide to the Sciences of the Qur’an. Al-Itqan fi ‘Ulum Al-Qur’an; Ithaca Press, 2011.

He is currently a Senior Teaching Fellow at School of Oriental & African Studies, (SOAS) University of London teaching Qur’anic Arabic. He is also working part time as a project manager for Qatar Foundation and the British Council to increase the teaching of Arabic in UK schools. In addition to his teaching, translating and research work he is actively involved in helping to manage various cultural and academic activities.
